Boy, this one just hurts. Think about something you’ve wanted to do your whole life. Go on tour? Write a book? Be president? How about reach the north pole? Well, if you’re Rear Admiral Robert Peary, that’s exactly what you wanted to be the first to accomplish. And he did…sort of. As soon as Peary got back home, relaxed, and had a nice sandwich, he was embroiled — for the rest of his life — in the controversy of whether he, or fancy-pants doctor Frederick Cook, got there first. Come on. (Oh, and the worst part? To this day, no one’s sure about who pulled it off.)
